Celebrate Earth Day in Fairfield

Celebrate Earth Day on April 26 in Fairfield with family-friendly events in the Fairfield Civic Center Park and downtown.

Start off your day in the park, located behind city hall, for a community celebration hosted by the cities of Fairfield and Suisun City.  The festivities will be from 8 a.m. to noon and will include a fishing derby organized by Kids Day of Fishing, Inc.

The fishing derby, in memory of Robert Orlando, is for children between the ages of 3 and 15 years old and special needs children of all ages. The derby is limited to the first 250 children to register. Pre-registration is only available for children with special needs. There will be a sign up line at the event. Sign-in begins at 7:30 a.m. with the derby starting at 8:30 a.m.

All participants will receive derby shirts, rods and reels, tackle kits and bait to fish in the pond. The pond will be stocked with catfish and bass. Trophies will be awarded for top fish with a five-fish limit per angler.

The derby will also include hot dogs, chips and sodas served to the kids by the Fairfield Police Officers Association. Raffle prizes will be called at the end of the event.

For more information or to pre-register your child, call 707-425-9792 or visit http://www.kidsdayoffishing.org.

The Fairfield Main Street Association will have a booth set up at the derby to launch their historic walking tour of downtown Fairfield. Visitors can meet Sabine Goerke-Shrode, author of “Images of America Fairfield,” and go on a docent-led tour of the downtown.

Once the last fish has been caught, visitors can walk just a few blocks to the downtown area for All Things Art, presented by Artphit of Fairfield. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will include displayed art, live art demonstrations, contests, fashion shows, hair shows, music and performers, delicious local food, local history, a kids art corner, beer and wine, and more. Local artists who would like to showcase their own work at the event are asked to contact Artphit at 707-439-3573 or email artphits@gmail.com.

Together, these two events will lead to a day of fun for locals and visitors of all ages.
