Il Fiorello’s olive oil wins big at state competition

This year alone, Il Fiorello has won 22 awards for their organically farmed and milled olive oils ,including two Best of Class!

Il Fiorello Olive Oil Company is no stranger to winning international and local awards for their organically farmed and milled olive oils. This year alone, the Suisun Valley business  has won 22 awards, including two Best of Class. 



The most recent awards came this week from the 2018 California State Fair competition, where Il Fiorello, after being judged against the best oils produced in the state, added two gold medals, three silver medals, and another Best of Class medal to their already impressive medal count for their 2017 crop. This time, the Best of Class recognition is for their organic French Blend Extra Virgin Olive Oil, grown in the Il Fiorello groves in Suisun Valley.



With a combined medal count of 1 Best of Class Medal, 2 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals from the Los Angeles International and the Yolo County Olive Oil Competitions, these new awards bring Il Fiorello to a total of 22 medals  this year alone! 



One of the silver medals in the State Competition was awarded to the Extra Virgin Olive Oil Il Fiorello milled from olives brought in on their annual Community Milling Day.



“This is the third year in a row we’ve submitted our community milling Extra Virgin Olive Oil to the State Competition,” said Ann Sievers, owner, miller, and chief forklift driver, of Il Fiorello, “And each year, we’ve won an award for it. It’s really delicious oil!”



Recognizing an opportunity to partner with small local olive growers, every year, Il Fiorello sets aside two days for growers and gardeners to bring in their olives to be combined in communal  milling runs.



“The largest single harvest of olives we saw last Community Milling Day was roughly 800 lbs., but we also had a lady that brought in about 5 pounds, and one little boy who was very proud of the six ounces he picked," Sievers said.  "If people bring in olives, they get a percentage of the olive oil produced.”



With a laugh, she added, “And this year, bragging rights to a Silver Medal!”





Il Fiorello hosts a Visitor Center in beautiful Suisun Valley near Fairfield, open daily from 1-5 p.m. for tastings of world-class olive oils with food pairings, unique balsamic vinegar reductions, and local wines. Local wines are available by the glass or bottle to enjoy in the tasting room, or out on the patio or peaceful grounds. Private and group tastings and tours are available by reservation.

Fun Fact: The name Il Fiorello means “little flower” in Italian, so named after Ann’s grandfather, Dominic Fiorello. She chose the symbolic name for the tiny, white flowers on the olive trees, each of which will become a delicious olive for milling into their super premium oil.
