More than 5 million people visit the Napa Valley wine country every year. If you’ve ever tried to enjoy the wineries of Napa on a weekend during the summer or at harvest season, then you likely come away believing those 5 million visitors chose to visit the same weekend you chose to indulge in some grape.

East of Napa, on the other side of the Howell Mountains, which are also known as the Mount George Range, is another of California’s grape-growing region – Suisun Valley.

Unlike Napa Valley, the Suisun Valley can boast of many quiet days where the beauty of the hills on the horizons and the splendor fields of vineyards is not scarred by miles of roadways crowded with miles of bumper-to-bumper cars and tour buses creeping along at a snail’s pace.

Vezér Family Vineyard is a Suisun Valley winery owned by Frank and Liz Vezér. Their winery is best known for its Petite Sirah and Zinfandel, which are rated among the best in the region and are used in well-known wines, such as Sin Zin and Ravenswood.

Frank and Liz Vezér came to the Suisun Valley 20 years ago. They decided to establish their own wines and produced their first vintage of Zinfandel in 2003. Since then, they have produced several additional vintages that have won accolades and awards from across the country and worldwide.

What started as one vineyard has grown to three scenic sites with 60 acres of Suisun Valley grapelands.

Vezér produces 5,000 to 6,000 cases of wine annually with the majority of its sales going to its wine club members and to patrons, most of them locals to extend to the Bay Area and to Northern California, who visit the three different tasting locations they share with wine aficionados.

Laura Cooke got what she describes as “her big break” in the wine industry in 2014 by landing the job as vice president of operations at Vezér Family Vineyard. Since then Vezér has gotten the nod as “Best Hidden Gem” twice, beating out Napa and Sonoma wineries.

You won’t find Vezér wines at your supermarket. Vezér does not do retail sales. Roughly 90 percent of its wines are sold directly to the consumer, Cooke said.

“We’re not as tourist-driven as Napa wineries,” Cooke said.

She quickly added that Vezér in recent years has partnered with several local hotels in Fairfield, Vallejo and nearby to foster their guests learning about the Hidden Gem that’s located nearby.

There used to be an off-season at the Suisun Valley wineries. That has changed in recent years as wineries – including Vezér – have expanded relationships with locals by offering outdoor concerts, outside tastings and fundraisers to benefit local organizations.

Special events have become a Vezér specialty. Weddings and corporate gatherings are a growing element of their overall growth and success.

Vezér this past year hosted several rock cover bands, drawing small crowds of a few hundred rock ‘n’ roll fans who love music in the warm outdoor evening lushness of the Suisun Valley. Cooke said Vezér will host even more concerts in 2017.

The concerts take place at Vezér’s winery at the Mankas Gardens, where visitors you can enjoy the tasting room or relax in a landscaped garden. Other concerts take place a few miles to the west at Vezér’s Blue Victorian Tasting Room, Barrel Room & Vineyards on Suisun Valley Road. Visitors to the Blue Victorian can also arrange for guided tours led by wine experts.

Last, but certainly not least, there is the Ranch Estate on Clayton Road that is the private residence of the Vezér family and more than 31 acres of vineyards where Vezér Club members enjoy annual concerts.
