Western Railway Museum expands hours for summer months
For those looking for something fun, relaxing, and educational this summer, a visit to the Western Railway Museum is a perfect day-trip.
Expanded Hours: Now through Labor Day, the Museum expands its operating times and will be open 5 days each week: Wednesday through Sunday from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The Museum will also be open and operating trains on Independence Day (Friday July 4) and Labor Day (Monday September 1).
The highlight of any visit is an 11-mile round trip ride on an authentic, restored historic railcar through the Sacramento Northern Railway National Historic District. Trains run every 90 minutes beginning at11:00 AM. Volunteer docents talk about local sights and railroad history on every trip.
New Activities: In the new Traction Labs exhibit, visitors of all ages can use solar and wind power to generate electricity, and operate miniature streetcars on the model railroad.
Once daily at 1:15 PM, docents lead a guided tour through the collection in Car House three, where 25 life-size antique electric rail cars are preserved.
New games, puzzles, and activities for kids ages 2 - 10 are available for free at the Admissions Desk.
The Museum Store, Depot Café, and Laflin Park Picnic Area are also open each and every day that the Museum operates trains.
Special Events: On Saturday June 14, the Museum will debut its newest artifact, San Diego light-rail-vehicle #1018. After a brief dedication ceremony at 11 AM, #1018 will be operating approximately every 30 minutes throughout the day, making 1-mile loops around the Museum property.
