Western Railway Museum's spring trains prepare for April departure
Tickets are now available for two of the most beloved springtime activities in Fairfield every year. April is often the best time of year to admire the beautiful wildflowers growing in the nearby Montezuma Hills just outside of Suisun City and the Western Railway Museum's Scenic Limited and Vintage Comet trains give visitors a front row seat for viewing while on an 11-mile ride that includes stunning views of the rolling hills and Mt. Diablo.
The Scenic Limited is an hour-long ride for all ages that focuses on the natural wildflowers that dot the hillsides along the rail line. Passengers admire panoramic views of hillsides and fields populated with native wildflowers such as poppies, goldfields, and lupine. The trains will run most Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays in April. Several departure times are available for each day.
Scenic Limited general admission tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $7 for children 2 to 14. Children under 2 and all museum members are free. First class tickets include cookies and lemonade served in the parlor car and are $17 for adults, $16 for seniors and $14 for kids 2-14. Members are $7. The Vintage Comet also includes wildflower viewing, but features award-winning wines from the Suisun Valley Wine-Co Op. Suisun Valley is the second oldest AVA in California (Napa is the first), and is the next major valley east of Napa. Best known for Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Suisun Valley has been described by Sunset Magazine as “undiscovered and unpretentious, much as Napa was in the 1960s. Cool afternoon breezes from San Francisco Bay bring down high daytime temperatures – a good thing for grapes.” The 90-minute, 11-mile trip departs every Saturday at 4 p.m. in April and is geared towards adults. Enjoy tastes of Suisun Valley wines, paired appetizers and door prizes as you travel on the historic train along what was once the Sacramento Northern mainline.
General admission tickets on the Vintage Comet are $30 and include seating in the 1020 train car and souvenir wine glass. Western Railway Museum members are $25. First-class tickets are $40 ($35 for museum members) and include seating in the parlor car and a souvenir wine glass. All ticketholders must be over 21 and I.D. will be required. Proceeds from this event benefit the Western Railway Museum and Solano Midnight Sun Breast Cancer Foundation.
Tickets on either the Scenic Limited or Vintage Comet covers full admission to the museum, which includes the historic railway exhibits, rides on the vintage streetcar, access to the large shaded picnic grounds, the Museum Store, library archives, and the Depot Cafe.
The Western Railway Museum is located on the State Highway 12 in rural Solano County, midway between Interstate 80 in Fairfield and the quaint Sacramento Delta town of Rio Vista.
